והוה גברא משבטא דבית בנימין ושמיה קיש בר אביאל בר צרור בר בכורת בר אפיח בר גברא משבטא דבית בנימן גבר חילא:
khyla gbr bnymn dbyth mshbTa gbra br apykh br bkwrth br tsrwr br abyal br qysh wshmyh bnymyn dbyth mshbTa gbra whwh
Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah, the son of a Benjamite, a mighty man of valor.

וליה הוה בר ושמיה שאול עולים ושפיר ולית גברא מבני ישראל שפיר מניה מכתפיה ולעלא רם מכל עמא:
ema mkl rm wlela mkthpyh mnyh shpyr yshral mbny gbra wlyth wshpyr ewlym shawl wshmyh br hwh wlyh
He had a son whose name was Saul, an impressive young man; and there was not among the children of Israel a more handsome person than he. From his shoulders and upward he was taller than any of the people.

ואבדא אתניא לקיש אבוהי דשאול ואמר קיש לשאול בריה דבר כען עמך ית חד מעולמיא וקום אזיל בעי ית אתניא:
athnya yth bey azyl wqwm mewlmya khd yth emk ken dbr bryh lshawl qysh wamr dshawl abwhy lqysh athnya wabda
The donkeys of Kish, Saul’s father, were lost. Kish said to Saul his son, “Now take one of the servants with you, and arise, go look for the donkeys.”

ועבר בטורא דבית אפרים ועבר בארע דרומא ולא אשכחו ועבר בארע מתברא ולית ועבר בארע שבטא בנימין ולא אשכחו:
ashkkhw wla bnymyn shbTa bare webr wlyth mthbra bare webr ashkkhw wla drwma bare webr aprym dbyth bTwra webr
He passed through the hill country of Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalishah, but they didn’t find them. Then they passed through the land of Shaalim, and they weren’t there. Then he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they didn’t find them.

אינון אתו בארעא דבה נביא דיי ושאול אמר לעולימא דעמיה איתא וניתוב דלמא ישבוק אבא מן עיסק אתניא ויציף לנא:
lna wytsyp athnya eysq mn aba yshbwq dlma wnythwb aytha demyh lewlyma amr wshawl dyy nbya dbh barea athw aynwn
When they had come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant who was with him, “Come! Let’s return, lest my father stop caring about the donkeys and be anxious for us.”

ואמר ליה הא כען נביא דיי בקרתא הדא וגברא מתנבי קשוט כל דאתנבי אתקימא יתקים כען ניזיל לנא תמן מאים יחוי לנא ית ארחנא דאתנא עלה:
elh dathna arkhna yth lna ykhwy maym thmn lna nyzyl ken ythqym athqyma dathnby kl qshwT mthnby wgbra hda bqrtha dyy nbya ken ha lyh wamr
The servant said to him, “Behold now, there is a man of God in this city, and he is a man who is held in honor. All that he says surely happens. Now let’s go there. Perhaps he can tell us which way to go.”

ואמר שאול לעולימיה והא ניזיל ואם מקבל ממון מה נעיל לנביא דיי אף אנחנא זודין עדן עטרו מננא ומדעם דכשר לית לאעלא לנביא דיי ומה עמנא למעבד:
lmebd emna wmh dyy lnbya laela lyth dkshr wmdem mnna eTrw edn zwdyn ankhna ap dyy lnbya neyl mh mmwn mqbl wam nyzyl wha lewlymyh shawl wamr
Then Saul said to his servant, “But behold, if we go, what should we bring the man? For the bread is spent in our sacks, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God. What do we have?”

ואוסיף עולימא למעני ית שאול ואמר הא אשתכח בידי זוזא חדא דכספא ונתן לנביא דיי ויחוי לנא ית ארחנא:
arkhna yth lna wykhwy dyy lnbya wnthn dkspa khda zwza bydy ashthkkh ha wamr shawl yth lmeny ewlyma wawsyp
The servant answered Saul again and said, “Behold, I have in my hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver. I will give that to the man of God, to tell us our way.”

בקדמין בישראל כדנן אמר גברא במיזליה למתבע אולפן מן קדם יי איתו ונתמטי עד חזויא ארי לנביא יומא דין מתקרי מלקדמין חזויא:
khzwya mlqdmyn mthqry dyn ywma lnbya ary khzwya ed wnthmTy aythw yy qdm mn awlpn lmthbe bmyzlyh gbra amr kdnn byshral bqdmyn
(In earlier times in Israel, when a man went to inquire of God, he said, “Come! Let’s go to the seer;” for he who is now called a prophet was before called a seer.)

ואמר שאול לעולימיה תקין פתגמך איתא ניזיל ואזלו לקרתא דתמן נביא דיי:
dyy nbya dthmn lqrtha wazlw nyzyl aytha pthgmk thqyn lewlymyh shawl wamr
Then Saul said to his servant, “Well said. Come! Let’s go.” So they went to the city where the man of God was.

אינון סלקין במסקנא דקרתא ואינון אשכחו עולימן נפקין לממלי מיא ואמרו להן האית הכא חזויא:
khzwya hka hayth lhn wamrw mya lmmly npqyn ewlymn ashkkhw waynwn dqrtha bmsqna slqyn aynwn
As they went up the ascent to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said to them, “Is the seer here?”

ואתיבו יתהון ואמרא אית דא הא קדמך אוחי כען ארי יומא דין על לקרתא ארי שירו נכסת קודשיא יומא דין לעמא בבית אסחרותא:
askhrwtha bbyth lema dyn ywma qwdshya nksth shyrw ary lqrtha el dyn ywma ary ken awkhy qdmk ha da ayth wamra ythhwn wathybw
They answered them and said, “He is. Behold, he is before you. Hurry now, for he has come today into the city; for the people have a sacrifice today in the high place.

כמיעלכון לקרתא כן תשכחון יתיה עד לא יסק לבית אסחרותא למיכל ארי לא אכיל עמא עד מיתוהי ארי הוא פריס מזונא בתר כן אכלין זמניא וכען סקו ארי יתיה כיומא דין תשכחון יתיה:
ythyh thshkkhwn dyn kywma ythyh ary sqw wken zmnya aklyn kn bthr mzwna prys hwa ary mythwhy ed ema akyl la ary lmykl askhrwtha lbyth ysq la ed ythyh thshkkhwn kn lqrtha kmyelkwn
As soon as you have come into the city, you will immediately find him before he goes up to the high place to eat; for the people will not eat until he comes, because he blesses the sacrifice. Afterwards those who are invited eat. Now therefore go up; for at this time you will find him.”

וסליקו לקרתא אינון עלין בגו קרתא והא שמואל נפיק לקדמותהון למיסק לבית אסחרותא:
askhrwtha lbyth lmysq lqdmwthhwn npyq shmwal wha qrtha bgw elyn aynwn lqrtha wslyqw
They went up to the city. As they came within the city, behold, Samuel came out toward them to go up to the high place.

ומן קדם יי אתאמר לשמואל יומא חד קדם מיתי שאול למימר:
lmymr shawl mythy qdm khd ywma lshmwal athamr yy qdm wmn
Now Yahweh had revealed to Samuel a day before Saul came, saying,

כעידן הדין מחר אשלח לותך גברא מארעא שבט בנימין ותמשחיניה למהוי מלכא על עמי ישראל ויפרוק ית עמי מידא דפלשתאי ארי גלי קדמי דוחקא דעמי ארי עלת קבילתהון לקדמי:
lqdmy qbylthhwn elth ary demy dwkhqa qdmy gly ary dplshthay myda emy yth wyprwq yshral emy el mlka lmhwy wthmshkhynyh bnymyn shbT marea gbra lwthk ashlkh mkhr hdyn keydn
“Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man out of the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over my people Israel. He will save my people out of the hand of the Philistines; for I have looked upon my people, because their cry has come to me.”

ושמואל חזא ית שאול ומן קדם יי אתאמר ליה הא גברא דאמרית לך דין יעדי מרותא מן עמי:
emy mn mrwtha yedy dyn lk damryth gbra ha lyh athamr yy qdm wmn shawl yth khza wshmwal
When Samuel saw Saul, Yahweh said to him, “Behold, the man of whom I spoke to you! He will have authority over my people.”

וערע שאול ית שמואל בגו תרעא ואמר חוי כען לי אי דין בית חזויא:
khzwya byth dyn ay ly ken khwy wamr threa bgw shmwal yth shawl were
Then Saul approached Samuel in the gateway, and said, “Please tell me where the seer’s house is.”
19
ואתיב שמואל ית שאול ואמר אנא חזויא סק לקדמי לבית אסחרותא ותיכלון עמי יומא דין ואשלחינך בצפרא וכל די בלבך אחוי לך:
lk akhwy blbk dy wkl btspra washlkhynk dyn ywma emy wthyklwn askhrwtha lbyth lqdmy sq khzwya ana wamr shawl yth shmwal wathyb
Samuel answered Saul and said, “I am the seer. Go up before me to the high place, for you are to eat with me today. In the morning I will let you go and will tell you all that is in your heart.

ועל עסק אתניא דאבדא לך ואת אתיתא למבעיהון יומא דין דנן תלתא יומין לא תשוי ית לבך עליהון ארי אשתכחא ודמן כל חמדת ישראל הלא די לך ולכל בית אבוך:
abwk byth wlkl lk dy hla yshral khmdth kl wdmn ashthkkha ary elyhwn lbk yth thshwy la ywmyn thltha dnn dyn ywma lmbeyhwn athytha wath lk dabda athnya esq wel
As for your donkeys who were lost three days ago, don’t set your mind on them, for they have been found. For whom does all Israel desire? Is it not you and all your father’s house?”

ואתיב שאול ואמר הלא בר שבט בנימן אנא מזעירי שבטיא דישראל וזרעיתי חלשא מכל זרעית שבט בנימן ולמא מללתא עמי כפתגמא הדין:
hdyn kpthgma emy mlltha wlma bnymn shbT zreyth mkl khlsha wzreythy dyshral shbTya mzeyry ana bnymn shbT br hla wamr shawl wathyb
Saul answered, “Am I not a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? And my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? Why then do you speak to me like this?”

ודבר שמואל ית שאול וית עולימיה ואעלינון לאסחרותא ויהב להון אתר בריש זמיניא ואינון כתלתין גברא:
gbra kthlthyn waynwn zmynya brysh athr lhwn wyhb laskhrwtha waelynwn ewlymyh wyth shawl yth shmwal wdbr
Samuel took Saul and his servant and brought them into the guest room, and made them sit in the best place among those who were invited, who were about thirty persons.

ואמר שמואל לטבחא הב ית מנתא די יהבית לך דאמרית לך שוי יתה עמך:
emk ythh shwy lk damryth lk yhbyth dy mntha yth hb lTbkha shmwal wamr
Samuel said to the cook, “Bring the portion which I gave you, of which I said to you, ‘Set it aside.’”

וארים טבחא ית שקא וירכיה ושוי קדם שאול ואמר הא דאשתאר שוי קדמך אכול ארי לזימנא נטיר לך למימר עמא זמנית לשירותא ואכל שאול עם שמואל ביומא ההוא:
hhwa bywma shmwal em shawl wakl lshyrwtha zmnyth ema lmymr lk nTyr lzymna ary akwl qdmk shwy dashthar ha wamr shawl qdm wshwy wyrkyh shqa yth Tbkha warym
The cook took up the thigh, and that which was on it, and set it before Saul. Samuel said, “Behold, that which has been reserved! Set it before yourself and eat; because it has been kept for you for the appointed time, for I said, ‘I have invited the people.’” So Saul ate with Samuel that day.

ונחתו מבית אסחרותא לקרתא ומליל עם שאול על איגרא:
aygra el shawl em wmlyl lqrtha askhrwtha mbyth wnkhthw
When they had come down from the high place into the city, he talked with Saul on the housetop.

ואקדימו והוה כמסק צפרא וקרא שמואל לשאול לאגרא למימר קום ואשלחינך וקם שאול ונפקו תרויהון הוא ושמואל לברא:
lbra wshmwal hwa thrwyhwn wnpqw shawl wqm washlkhynk qwm lmymr lagra lshawl shmwal wqra tspra kmsq whwh waqdymw
They arose early; and about daybreak, Samuel called to Saul on the housetop, saying, “Get up, that I may send you away.” Saul arose, and they both went outside, he and Samuel, together.

אינון נחתין בסיפי קרתא ושמואל אמר לשאול אמר לעולימא ויעבר קדמנא ועבר ואת קום הכא כיומא דין ואשמעינך ית פתגמא דיי:
dyy pthgma yth washmeynk dyn kywma hka qwm wath webr qdmna wyebr lewlyma amr lshawl amr wshmwal qrtha bsypy nkhthyn aynwn
As they were going down at the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, “Tell the servant to go on ahead of us.” He went ahead, then Samuel said, “But stand still first, that I may cause you to hear God’s message.”
